When I used to have 14 canoes people would ask me why I had so many. Hulls that turn easily usually don't track well, which means go in a straight line without extra effort, so its rare to find a hull that does everything well. I had a 12' footer that was designed as a solo, whitewater, wilderness tripper that while still carrying a lot of weight, still maneuvered easily and moved along quite well.Ĭanoe design is a compromise. A 12' tends to be a fairly slow hull based on its width to length ratio but I'm talking about the canoes you will probably be looking at. It's not too long but not short enough to effect it's efficiency dramatically. Everybody's needs differ, but, a 15-16' canoe is a great general purpose length.
